"Chicken harvest soup" was what I said to my waiter at the M'town O'Charley's on Sunday right after Sunday School. I couldn't wait. It's like chicken noodle soup, but thicker and I had my mind set on it. [Hint: you should only order the soup first thing for brunch or lunch. Any later and it's too thick.] 40 minutes later, out came the food! As the waitress reaches for what I think is the soup I've been waiting on, she says, "we're out of the chicken harvest soup, but I brought you our other special, chicken tortilla." Really? She must not know that I could be classified as one of the 'pickiest eaters' ever. I ordered a waffle instead, but it wasn't the same. The best was when our actual waiter came back by and said there was still some chicken harvest left. That made me excited until he finished his sentence with "at the bottom of the bowl." Nahh, I'll pass on that too. Just bring on the waffle.
Would you normally bring someone something that they didn't order? It's never happened in a restaurant before, but it made me start thinking about life. How many times do I put in my order for what I think is the best plan for my life? Oh, about all the time. I think I know exactly what I want, but I'm so glad that's not always what I get. Some of the things I've prayed for before are pretty embarrassing. But the Lord is not a short-order cook, so he gives me just what I need. That is really refreshing. This story would be even better if I took the chicken tortilla and loved it more than the chicken harvest, but the short-order cook at O'Charley's is not the Lord, so I think I'm okay with sending it back.
